Ask!

“You’re wrong!”

“You should have done this…”

“This is how it works…”

Wait! How can you even tell me these things when you don’t exactly know what really happened? Where you there when this whole thing happened? Did you see me do this or do that? Did you even ask me what really happened? If you didn’t, then how dare you (excuse my language) make comments about what I should have done about the situation?

Putting yourself in the shoes of other people

put-yourself-in-their-shoes

I think it’s good to highlight this very important lesson once in a while to remind us of the importance of knowing other people’s context in order to get a better understanding of their situation. More often than not, we jump into conclusions that are usually unfounded and unfair. We seldom stop to pause and think and process our thoughts because our mouths are itching to say something. And it feels good. Yes, it feels good to have shown someone that we are knowledgeable and expert-like, implying that we are better at handling situations. This whole self-centered state has clouded us so much that we have completely forgotten who we are speaking to — a relative, a friend, colleague, someone close to us, a person. And when the mist lifts, we realize that it’s too late — we have already offended someone.

Had we stopped and zippered our mouths. Had we listened instead and inquired about the situation. Had we just waited in order to be clarified — we would have probably said some kind words. We would have shown them that “it’s alright; these things happen.” We would have done better. We would have felt better.

So, the next time we feel like giving someone an advice, let’s think twice. Be wise. Ask.
