Letting Go

Letting Go

This is the second time I used the phrase “let go” here in TMiM. However, this time I’m using it to mean something else.

Thanks to Mariah Carey, we have a song to listen to whenever we feel the need to express how sad we are at letting go of someone we love so much. The line “Spread your wings and fly, butterfly” in her song is metaphorical of situations wherein one needs to set the other free in order for that person to live. For if you keep the butterfly with you, the poor beautiful creature will not only die literally but will miss out on the world — the opportunity to fly freely and be one with nature. Carey is suggesting here that when we love people, we love them as though they are butterflies. That no matter how painful it can get, we have to learn to set them free. Loving is being prepared to set your beloved free.

“If you should return to me, we truly are meant to be…” I think that loving can be compared to wishing for something. When we want something for our birthday, we feel excited. And when it’s there, we feel happy. But after sometime, that feeling fades away — some of us would slowly forget about that something, some of us don’t. For me, one is truly loving when one still finds meaning or significance in his or her relationship with the other even after the romance and the feeling of thrill and excitement it brings. So I really like the line I quoted above by Carey because it reminds me of the velveteen rabbit who felt “real” after his owner (the boy in the story) played with him and made connection to him. He was treated by the boy as a “mate”, someone he could talk to and cuddle and fondle… But like Puff, the magic dragon, the rabbit had to learn to set the boy free, for the boy has to grow and become wiser. Truth be told, he had to let go.

I think I know why I’m writing about butterflies and letting go…(laughing). 🙂
