The ‘Old Soul’ That Is Me

I’ve always thought of myself as someone who wants to befriend everyone — although probably to the exception of men as this gayness  in me (and very effeminate at that) finds it hard and even awkward to converse with them. Anyway, that was just me thinking aloud as I’m not going to tweet about my gayness in this post. I am, however, going to tweet about the OLD SOUL in me.

Playing classical music in the classroom and my expression of love for it has never been received quite well by most of my students. At first I thought it was just unique to that first batch that they didn’t like classical music, but to my surprise it was the same for the other batches I’ve taught. I mean, they would smile of course and sing along, but I could tell they were only pretending. Then I began to wonder if I was the problem.

I started observing myself — my likes and dislikes, the commonalities among my friends, my posts on Facebook, the kind of Music I compose and like — and they all tell me one thing: I’ve got an OLD SOUL… and by that I mean a person who is young (I’m still 29), but thinks, feels, and expresses himself like an old person. Urban dictionary would define it as — a spiritual person who is wise beyond his or her years; a person of strong emotional stability.

I’ve always wondered why it’s been so hard to keep friends of my age (more or less). Like I would probably get to converse with them once or twice, and if ever there is an exception, that would probably be on occasional basis. If I were to recollect all the good conversations I’ve had in years, those would be the ones that I’ve done with people way older than me.

Sometimes I wish I was old (like really old) already, so I’d be treated seriously by people around me. Most of them (with the exception of a few) don’t take me seriously as I don’t look credible to them. To them, I’m supposed to be young — someone who’s far away from the finish line. Truth be told, this challenge seems to be unique to me as my passion is in teaching. This may not be a problem, however, to the other old souls in this world as we are generally happy to be by ourselves or be with someone who’s of the same wavelength as ours.

So, yeah, I’ve always thought of myself as someone who wants to befriend everyone. Hey, why not?
